I oversee the day to day operation of a cattle feedlot.  

I make sure that we’re set up to feed and raise our animals in the most efficient way possible.

I’m responsible for ensuring that our operation is a safe and healthy place for both our animals and employees.

Some days, I spend the whole day outdoors working with a vet or helping move cattle. Other days are spent planning budgets and writing reports on the computer. It’s great to have that variation in my work.

Job Requirements & Duties

  • Make sure the feedlot is following safety standards for both humans and cattle 
  • Monitor the health of animals and call in veterinarians when needed
  • Write budgets and make sure the finances of the operation are in order
  • Hire and train new employees and make sure they treat the animals well
  • Go through numbers and determine whether the animals are growing at the rate they’re supposed to be based on feeding plans
  • Make weekly and monthly plans for employees to follow based on the performance of the feedlot 

Education & Training

  • A university degree in Animal Science or Agribusiness would be valuable for this job.
